Anxiolysis

Dr. Christopher Emuedue and his staff have seen many patients struggle with some degree of dental anxiety.  The fear that arises for these patients with any dental appointment may be caused by a previous negative experience during a dental procedure.  Other patients have a sensitive gag reflex that always makes dental work dreadful.  Whatever the cause, our office offers anxiolysis to relax nervous patients and ease fears so necessary dental work is not delayed.

Anxiolysis is administered by taking a pill orally before the appointment. The medication is a light sedative, such as valium.  It will relax a patient during a procedure but still allow the patient to drive themselves home after the appointment. This sedation option is recommended for those with mild to moderate anxiety. The important thing is that our patients do not put off necessary dental work and expose themselves to further risk because of an anxiety.

Flossing Properly

At the dental office of Dr. Christopher Emuedue, we want you and your family to continue healthy oral care routines at home. Regular flossing is essential to maintaining oral health and you should floss once a day, either before or after brushing. To get the most benefit out of flossing, remember these tips:

  • Using a strand of dental floss about 18 inches long allows you to use a clean portion of floss between each tooth.

  • Wrapping the ends of the floss around a finger on each of your hands gives you the best control.

  • To floss, slide the floss between each tooth and rub the floss back and forth up until you reach your gums.

  • Pushing at your gums too hard with floss can cause damage, and isn’t necessary to floss properly. Gently rub the floss up to one gum, then down and back up towards the other.

  • As you move on to the next tooth, adjust the floss to expose an unused portion.

  • Repeat this rubbing motion between each tooth and behind the back teeth.

Tooth Extraction

When a tooth needs to be extracted a patient typically becomes anxious to complete the procedure and get it over with. Having a tooth pulled is sometimes necessary to remove decay or dental damage. Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry will discuss sedation options during a consultation and explain the entire process in detail to assure the patient is as comfortable as possible before, during, and after.

Teeth may be extracted to make room for orthodontics, or to remove a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. The most common type of extraction is wisdom teeth. This is because wisdom teeth can lead to infection. The procedure involves cutting the tooth and gently rocking it back-and-forth to loosen it from the jawbone. To ensure that the stitches don’t break after surgery, Dr. Emuedue will give you strict post-op instructions to follow once the procedure is complete.

Pediatric Dentistry in Greenville, TX

It is important that your child visits the dentist before his or her first birthday. Doing so prevents dental disease and decay that might develop in the future. Additionally, visiting a pediatric dentist like Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry is beneficial to parents because Dr. Emuedue can educate them on proper oral hygiene for infants, toddlers, and children.

Cavities are most common in children, which is why it’s important to clean their gums with a moist cloth before teeth erupt to wash away harmful sugars. Children should maintain a healthy diet to fight against tooth decay, bad breath, and periodontal disease. Our dental team can answer any questions you may have about pediatric dental services and we assure to make you and your child as comfortable as possible during their oral health journey.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

Do you see blood in the water when you spit out your toothpaste? If so, that’s a problem. Gingivitis, or inflamed gums, is a common ailment, but it’s an ailment all the same and requires treatment and preventive effort.

Sometimes, people’s gums can bleed if they are brushing too hard with a hard-bristled brush. But in most cases, bleeding is the result of infection. Bacteria are always growing in the mouth and are often beneficial or harmless, but they can easily grow out of control in the gum pockets if they have enough food. Bacteria produce plaque around the gum line, which hardens into tartar. Acid sticks to plaque and tartar, irritating the gums and causing them to bleed.

Some factors put people at greater risk: smoking, pregnancy, blood thinners, and dry mouth. The last one is a common medication side-effect. People in these situations need to be especially vigilant about their oral hygiene (remembering that brushing needs to be done consistently, but not too hard), and to come in regularly for professional cleanings.
