Regular screenings are vital for adults, but prevention is the best strategy. To that end, we’ve kept up with cancer research and want to inform our patients of a new study linking oral cancer to alcohol.

The study by the American Society of Clinical Oncology differed from earlier studies by examining alcohol in isolation. Studies have long found that alcohol in combination with smoking increases the risk of cancer, but the new study found that alcohol alone is responsible for about 5% of new cancer cases, including oral cancer. It is unclear why alcohol would cause oral cancer, although researchers speculate that it damages the mouth’s soft lining, which then has to regrow, creating a risk each time that DNA will be miscopied. What did seem clear is that the type of alcohol consumed was irrelevant and that light and moderate drinking also created a risk, although heavy drinking was the most dangerous. However, the research also found that when people quit drinking, their risk of contracting cancer in the aerodigestive tract decreased.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. As a result of their difficulty fighting off infections and vulnerability to inflammation, people with diabetes have particular dental needs, which we are sensitive to. In the past, they may have wondered whether they were good candidates for implants, and on that front, we have good news.

People with diabetes do not recover from wounds as quickly. This was perceived as a problem when undergoing surgery, including the incisions that need to be made for implant placement. However, the process during which the implant and jawbone fuse together is also a long one, providing enough time for the incisions to heal. The bigger problem thought to confront diabetic implant patients was that gum inflammation is associated with implant failure. Diabetic patients are more vulnerable to gum disease and inflammation, so dentists worried that they may have higher rates of implant failure, as well. However, the American Dental Association recently conducted a study which showed that people with uncontrolled diabetes did not experience higher-than-average failure rates, after all. It is still necessary for gum disease to be kept in check through attentive oral hygiene practices, but the additional challenges diabetic people face do not necessarily rule out implants as a possibility.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. Tooth enamel is considered the hardest mineral substance in the body, but this doesn’t mean that it’s indestructible. Regardless of strength, enamel can be eroded by sugars and harmful acids that attack the teeth when we consume food and beverages. Once enamel is gone, it won’t return, and Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry will need to take measures to restore it.

A common clue that enamel has eroded is increased sensitivity to taste, textures, and temperatures, as well as cracks, chips, or discoloration. Enamel erodes because of the food and beverages we eat, particularly, sugary, starchy, and acidic foods. This is why we encourage patients to put away the soda and sip on H2O because water cleans the mouth with every sip and protects enamel in the process. If you suffer from tooth sensitivity, Dr. Emuedue can suggest a few techniques to reduce the pain.

If you have questions or concerns regarding oral care or dental health, please give us a call. Dental phobia differs from dental anxiety because those who suffer from dental anxiety usually make it to the office. People develop a dental phobia for a variety of different reasons such as a traumatic dental experience in the past. Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry encourages patients with a fear of the dentist to schedule a consultation to talk through these fears and determine a resolution.

People who suffer from a dental phobia may suffer from poor oral health as a result. Poor oral health can result in tooth loss if certain conditions such as periodontal disease, are left untreated. There are different levels of fear that a person may experience, and Dr. Christopher Emuedue is here for his patients every step of the way. We also offer different types of sedation options to meet your needs and ease your fears.

If you have questions or concerns regarding sedation dentistry or dental phobia, please give us a call. Greenville Family Dentistry encourages our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings. However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine. During a teeth cleaning, our hygienists thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.

If you need your teeth cleaned, don’t wait any longer. We encourage you to ask about an oral cancer screening with each dental checkup. Heavy smoking and drinking of course increase the risk of oral cancer, but oral cancer can still occur if someone never smokes. In fact, the human papilloma virus (HPV) was recently found to be responsible for most oral cancers that originated in the back of the mouth.

To screen for oral cancer, our doctors perform a visual exam and use an ultraviolet light device to detect any cancerous irregularities in tissue. This exam can be done in a short length of time and in addition to any dental appointment. Regular screenings are the best way to protect you and your family, but always contact us if you notice any inexplicable pain, swelling, or numbness in your throat or jaw.

To learn more about oral cancer screenings and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. The most important preventive technique should be utilized every day which includes brushing and flossing at least twice a day (or after every meal) to reduce plaque. If plaque is left on the teeth, this can lead to periodontal disease and other dental complications.

Preventive measures include eating a healthy diet, visiting our dental office twice a year for routine checkups, practicing proper oral hygiene habits at home, and avoiding cigarettes and alcohol. Foods containing sugar can cause tooth decay. Instead, choose foods that are more beneficial to teeth, like cheese, fruit, nuts, and vegetables. Additionally, poor oral hygiene habits, as well as smoking and drinking, can negatively impact your oral health.

If you would like to discuss dental health, please give us a call. The fear that arises for these patients with any dental appointment may be caused by a previous negative experience during a dental procedure. Other patients have a sensitive gag reflex that always makes dental work dreadful. Whatever the cause, our office offers anxiolysis to relax nervous patients and ease fears so necessary dental work is not delayed.

Anxiolysis is administered by taking a pill orally before the appointment. The medication is a light sedative, such as valium. It will relax a patient during a procedure but still allow the patient to drive themselves home after the appointment. This sedation option is recommended for those with mild to moderate anxiety. The important thing is that our patients do not put off necessary dental work and expose themselves to further risk because of an anxiety.

To learn more about sedation options and all the services we provide, visit GreenvilleFamilyDentistryTX.com for more information. Regular flossing is essential to maintaining oral health and you should floss once a day, either before or after brushing. To get the most benefit out of flossing, remember these tips:

Using a strand of dental floss about 18 inches long allows you to use a clean portion of floss between each tooth.

Wrapping the ends of the floss around a finger on each of your hands gives you the best control.

To floss, slide the floss between each tooth and rub the floss back and forth up until you reach your gums.

Pushing at your gums too hard with floss can cause damage, and isn’t necessary to floss properly. Gently rub the floss up to one gum, then down and back up towards the other.

As you move on to the next tooth, adjust the floss to expose an unused portion.

Repeat this rubbing motion between each tooth and behind the back teeth.

To learn more about flossing, oral hygiene, and all the services we provide, visit GreenvilleFamilyDentistryTX.com for more information. Having a tooth pulled is sometimes necessary to remove decay or dental damage. Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry will discuss sedation options during a consultation and explain the entire process in detail to assure the patient is as comfortable as possible before, during, and after.

Teeth may be extracted to make room for orthodontics, or to remove a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. The most common type of extraction is wisdom teeth. This is because wisdom teeth can lead to infection. The procedure involves cutting the tooth and gently rocking it back-and-forth to loosen it from the jawbone. To ensure that the stitches don’t break after surgery, Dr. Emuedue will give you strict post-op instructions to follow once the procedure is complete.

If you have questions or concerns about tooth extraction, please give us a call. Doing so prevents dental disease and decay that might develop in the future. Additionally, visiting a pediatric dentist like Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry is beneficial to parents because Dr. Emuedue can educate them on proper oral hygiene for infants, toddlers, and children.

Cavities are most common in children, which is why it’s important to clean their gums with a moist cloth before teeth erupt to wash away harmful sugars. Children should maintain a healthy diet to fight against tooth decay, bad breath, and periodontal disease. Our dental team can answer any questions you may have about pediatric dental services and we assure to make you and your child as comfortable as possible during their oral health journey.

If you have questions or concerns about dental health, please give us a call. If so, that’s a problem. Gingivitis, or inflamed gums, is a common ailment, but it’s an ailment all the same and requires treatment and preventive effort.

Sometimes, people’s gums can bleed if they are brushing too hard with a hard-bristled brush. But in most cases, bleeding is the result of infection. Bacteria are always growing in the mouth and are often beneficial or harmless, but they can easily grow out of control in the gum pockets if they have enough food. Bacteria produce plaque around the gum line, which hardens into tartar. Acid sticks to plaque and tartar, irritating the gums and causing them to bleed.

Some factors put people at greater risk: smoking, pregnancy, blood thinners, and dry mouth. The last one is a common medication side-effect. People in these situations need to be especially vigilant about their oral hygiene (remembering that brushing needs to be done consistently, but not too hard), and to come in regularly for professional cleanings.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. Everyone should get dental check-ups twice a year, but it’s especially important for children to keep up their oral hygiene. The consequences for them are particularly bad if they don’t.

Children are the primary demographic to suffer from cavities or caries, the little zones of decay in tooth enamel. Cavities are also the most common illness among children. Decay in both permanent and baby teeth is painful, making it a big problem for the child’s overall health. Young children suffering from tooth aches may have delays learning to speak. They also may avoid eating and be unable to sleep, leaving them tired and irritable in school and unable to concentrate on their lessons.

Cavities are easy to treat if they are caught soon enough, but through regular oral hygiene, they can be avoided entirely. If cavities are allowed to progress, however, the child may need replacement crowns or root canals. Regular dental check-ups also allow us to determine whether the child will need extractions or orthodontics in the future.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. We may notice it when we wake up in the morning, or we may feel it if we are dehydrated. Dry mouth affects about 10% of our population and tends to be more common in women than men. If you are experiencing symptoms of extreme dry mouth, schedule a consultation with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry to discuss your treatment options.

Dry mouth can be caused by a variety of factors. It can occur as a side effect of certain medication, or it may be due to a lack of saliva flow (dehydration). Dry mouth can lead to discomfort and dental problems if left untreated. If you notice a dry feeling in the mouth, frequent thirst, dry nasal passages, or mouth sores, Dr. Emuedue may need to explore treatment options with you.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dry mouth, please give us a call. Though these beverages are fine in moderation, they can cause stains to develop on tooth enamel. These stains are known as extrinsic stains and they are easily removed by a teeth whitening session or a professional cleaning from Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry.

Beverages such as coffee, wine, and tea contain pigments that can stain the teeth. Because of the location of these stains, they are easier to remove than intrinsic stains which lay deep into the dentin. Dr. Christopher Emuedue may suggest a whitening treatment depending on the discoloration. Discoloration can range from a yellowish color to a dark brown. While the cause of some ulcers is still being debated, there are others which could signal an oral health problem or which the patient should be made aware of.

Some ulcers are caused by the patient’s bite damaging the lining of their cheeks and lips. In these cases, the patient may need to undergo orthodontic work to get their teeth into a better position. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus-1. This virus is easily transferable and most people already have it, but during an outbreak, patients should be careful not to transfer bodily fluids from their mouths to their eyes and should avoid sharing cups and straws. Cankers are large white ulcers which doctors are still unsure of the cause of, but they are mainly found in teenagers and tend to occur when the patient is feeling stressed.

Unless they are being caused by physical irritation, ulcers usually clear up on their own after a month. But if they are painful, our office can provide patients with information about topical creams and antibiotics to get them under control.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. Although it’s normal for teeth to be sensitive for a little while after decayed material is removed, a repaired tooth is much more comfortable than one with ongoing decay. However, there are situations in which pain from a filling warrants a close look.

If a filling is preventing the patient from biting down or from doing so without pain, it is probably too high and needs to be redone. Some doctors also use materials for fillings which shrink after placement, which creates a gap bacteria can enter. This allows the decay process to continue. But even when there is no initial problem with the filling, it will not last forever. Eventually, usually after about ten years, the seal holding the filling in will break down, allowing it to come loose or for bacteria to enter the seal. When this happens, the patient will need to have the filling replaced. If the decay has been allowed to progress, they may need a larger restoration, such as a partial crown.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. Sugar plays a harmful role in tooth decay because sugar contains acid that attacks tooth enamel. It’s not the sugar itself that does the damage, but rather the chain of events that occur after consumption. Allow us to explain.

There’s a constant battle of bacteria that occurs in the mouth on a daily basis. This is because the teeth are frequently under attack by acids. When you consume sugar, the sugar latches onto tooth enamel, though saliva washes the sugar away, these acids can linger. We encourage you to reduce sugar intake to prevent cavities. Keep your mouth as clean as possible by brushing at least twice a day, flossing and least once a day and visit our office at least twice a year for dental checkups.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dental health, please give us a call. Extractions are a routine procedure and have a very high success rate. However, we do want our patients to be on the look-out for dry sockets and to know what to do should one develop.

After a simple extraction, a bit of the jawbone is exposed at the end of the empty socket. Ideally, the socket will quickly be sealed off with a blood clot, but there are some medications which interfere with clotting. This is why it is important for patients to disclose their full regimen of medications to us. The socket will close after a few days, but during that time, the clot must not be disturbed, or else the socket will dry out, causing pain and posing a risk of infection. Patients are always warned not to sip through straws for fear of dislodging the clot.

When dry sockets do develop, it is usually after a complicated extraction which required incisions and sutures. If a patient’s pain does not subside forty-eight hours after the extraction, they should return for an examination. We can treat a dry socket by cleaning and dressing it and will carefully monitor it afterward.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. Oral hygiene remains important for people with prosthetic teeth, but there are a few changes in habit they will need to make.

Keeping a fixed bridge clean of plaque requires that the gap between it and the gum line be flossed. To loop the floss around the bridge, patients will use a threader, which is a floppy device shaped like a sewing needle. People who have worn braces are already familiar with it. Patients might also be interested in specialty floss which has stiffened ends, allowing it to be pushed through the gap.

Christmas tree brushes, also known as proxy brushes, are another useful tool, particularly with implant-supported bridges which have larger gaps separating them from the gums. These brushes can be attached to longer handles for ease of use. Makers of electric toothbrushes and water picks are also manufacturing tips for use on implants, including those supporting multiple teeth.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. Dental crowns are a restorative option for teeth that have a significant amount of decay or are at risk of being chipped. A crown fits over the tooth like a little cap, and completely covers the tooth.

The process for installing a crown can usually be completed in two visits. To prepare the tooth your dentist will remove any decay, and may need to reshape the remaining tooth to ensure a great fit for the new crown. Once the tooth has been prepared, your dentist will take an impression of the area. This impression is sent to a dental lab where the crown is fabricated. Ask us about temporary options to wear while your new crown is being made. Once your custom crown is made, the crown will be cemented into place by your dentist at a second appointment. Our crowns blend right into your natural smile and can last a lifetime!

To learn more about crowns and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. Many teeth grinders only do so at night and may not even realize it. If you wake up with a sore jaw or a dull headache, these could be signs you are grinding your teeth at night and you should consult a dentist. Greenville Family Dentistry provides custom night guards to protect patient teeth from the negative effects of teeth grinding.

To outfit you with a new custom night guard, we begin with taking an impression of your mouth. This impression is sent to a dental lab where your custom product will be fabricated and fit. Ask us about temporary options to wear while your night guard is being made. On your next visit you can bring your custom night guard home, and with correct care, it will last for 10 years. The night guard will also help align the jaw and improve sleep!

To learn more about night guards and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. Gaps in the teeth can cause problems with eating and speech, and when a tooth is missing long enough the jaw bone is vulnerable and the structure becomes compromised. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we install permanent bridges that replace missing teeth and still look natural.

Permanent bridges use healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth to anchor a replacement in the appropriate location. The replacement tooth is held in place by caps on the teeth on either side. This can typically be accomplished in two visits. First, an impression of the area is taken so that a dental laboratory can create a bridge that will fit perfectly. While your new bridge is being fabricated, we can provide a temporary bridge for you to wear. On your second visit, the bridge will be cemented into place. With proper care bridges can last a lifetime, but can be replaced if needed.

To learn more about bridges and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. At Greenville Family Dentistry, frenectomies are performed to correct a number of issues patients may have with their teeth, lips, and tongue.

There are three main frenums in your mouth. One is located underneath your tongue, and removing this is called a lingual frenectomy. Patients with an enlarged frenum underneath their tongue will not be able to move their tongue freely. This interferes with speech and is often called ‘tongue tie’. Lingual frenectomies are typically performed on young patients, who can recover quickly and continue to develop their speech.

Another two frenums in your mouth are between the font teeth (both upper and lower) and connects the inner surface of the lip with the gum. Removing this attachment is called a labial frenectomy. Patients who have receding gums can benefit from this procedure, because a strong frenum from the gum to the lip can cause extra pulling on the gums and lead to further recession.

To learn more about frenectomies and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information.
