Vitamin D Can Protect Your Teeth

At Greenville Family Dentistry, we want you to hang on to your permanent teeth for a lifetime and if you’ve been supplementing your diet with foods that contain Vitamin D, then you’re more likely to do just that. You are more likely to get your source of vitamin D from drinking milk and exposing yourself to the sun, but how does the vitamin itself protect your teeth?

Studies have shown that vitamin D decreases bone loss and improves tooth retention and that dental cavities or decay can actually increase if vitamin D levels drop. There are three vitamin D super foods: salmon, mackerel, and mushrooms. Other food sources of vitamin D include cod liver oil, tuna canned in water and sardines. For those who don’t like fish, you can get your vitamin D supplement from milk, yogurt, beef, egg yolks and cheese.

Causes and Treatment for Sensitive Teeth

The good news is that sensitive teeth can be prevented by scheduling regular dental checkups at Greenville Family Dentistry, the bad news is that your teeth are likely unhealthy if they are already sensitive. You get sensitive teeth when your gums pull back and expose the surface beneath, called the dentin. This can happen if you brush too hard, develop gingivitis, grind your teeth or use tooth whitening products.

In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of your teeth – the part above the gum line. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Under both of these layers is the dentin which is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules. When dentin loses its protective covering, these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic and sticky foods to reach the nerves inside the tooth, resulting in hypersensitivity. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity, but practicing a good oral hygiene routine and brushing with a desensitizing American Dental Association (ADA) approved toothpaste should help reduce pain in the nerve.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, give us a call. For more information about oral health as well as the services we provide at the office, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. What is a Tooth Abscess?

At Greenville Family Dentistry, if you don’t schedule regular dental checkups or follow a proper oral hygiene routine, you risk developing a tooth abscess. An abscessed tooth is an infection within a tooth that has spread to the root tip or around the root. This infection originates from the tooth’s inner pulp chamber. Prior to the formation of an abscess, the tooth has essentially lost its ability to fight off infection, and bacteria are able to invade the pulp and multiply. As a result, the abscess appears as a collection of pus that is made up of dead white blood cells, tissue debris, and bacteria.

There are many causes for a tooth abscess. A very common cause is when a dental cavity becomes so large and deep that if it reaches the pulp chamber where an inflammatory process develops in the tooth. The initial symptoms begin with localized swelling and pain that gets progressively worse over time. A tender and sore mass (abscess) may then be felt with a finger and your gums may bleed.

If you experience swelling and pain in your gums or teeth, give us a call. For more information about oral health as well as the services we provide at the office, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. The Proper Flossing Technique

Every time you visit Greenville Family Dentistry for a checkup, there’s one question we will ask you, “Have you been flossing regularly?” The answer might be yes, or no, but what many of these “non-flossers” don’t realize is that this step plays an important role in dental health. Flossing does more than pick the food out of your teeth and keeping your smile clean and healthy. It prevents against gum disease and tooth decay. If you want to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime, utilize this proper flossing technique the next time you carry out your oral hygiene routine.

  • Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger will take up the floss as it becomes dirty.

  • Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.

  • Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.

  • When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a “C” shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.

  • Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up-and-down motions. Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth and don’t forget the back ones!

If you have further questions about flossing or oral hygiene, give us a call. For more information about oral health as well as the services we provide at the office, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

Pregnancy Gingivitis

Swollen gums, which may be sore and more susceptible to bleeding, are common during pregnancy. This is due to the hormone changes – particularly an increase in estrogen and progesterone – which can exaggerate the way in which gum tissues react to plaque. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we can provide expectant mothers with routine exams and cleanings during pregnancy, however, non-emergency procedures should only be performed during the second trimester.

When plaque isn’t removed, it can cause gingivitis. So-called “pregnancy gingivitis” affects most pregnant women to some degree and generally begins to surface during the second month of pregnancy. It is very important for expecting mothers to take treatment steps quickly if they have gum disease because they have a six times greater risk of having preterm and low-birth weight babies. Since the bacteria that cause gingivitis can enter the bloodstream, the bacteria can travel all the way down to the uterus.

If you are pregnant, please notify us when making your next appointment. For more information about dental hygiene or how to schedule an appointment with Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, call us at 903-455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

What is a Cavity?

We all know that when we hear the word “cavity” that it isn’t necessarily a good thing, but what is it? Dental cavities, also referred to as caries, are holes in the teeth caused by the destruction of your tooth enamel. Two main factors contribute to cavities – bacteria in the mouth and a diet high in sugar. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry have a variety of options to fill cavities when they arise, however, we’d prefer that they didn’t. Here is how you can prevent your teeth from decay.

The most important thing you can do for cavity prevention is schedule checkups with your dentist regularly. Getting professional teeth cleanings and regular oral exams can spot them early and help prevent problems. You should also avoid foods and beverages that are high in sugar. If you don’t you should at least brush soon after eating them. Good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and ideally after every meal, using fluoride containing toothpaste. To clean between your teeth, floss or use an interdental cleaner to reach where your toothbrush can’t.

For more information about dental hygiene or how to schedule an appointment with Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, call us at 903-455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com.

Your Child’s Visit to Greenville Family Dentistry

At Greenville Family Dentistry, we are always welcoming new patients regardless of age. The idea of early dental visits can be surprising to many new parents, but the general rule of pediatric dentistry is that your child should have their first visit by their first birthday. At Greenville Family Dentistry, our staff takes pride in providing your child with a positive experience. Here is how we make that happen.

The best way to prepare for this visit is to consider what you want to know, what you want to look for and what you should expect. Be prepared to ask about any concerns you may have while we get to know your child and teach them good oral hygiene habits. Teaching children these habits early can lead to a lifetime of good dental health.

You can also expect us to review your child’s history, respond to your questions and concerns, as well as talk to you about your child’s overall oral health, including: development, teething, biting, oral habits such as sucking, and factors that affect the risk of cavities, such as diet and hygiene practices.

For more information about pediatric services or how to schedule an appointment with Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, call us at 903-455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

How to Have a Tooth Friendly Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it is an infamous holiday for an abundance of food choices, many of which are not particularly healthy for your waistline or your teeth. Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay and this might be a problem when it comes time to devour pumpkin pie and candied yams. Fortunately, at Greenville Family Dentistry we have some foods to recommend so that you can have a tooth friendly Thanksgiving.

For appetizers, put out plates of cheese and mixed nuts for guests to snack on while dinner is being prepared. Cheese is great for teeth because it contains strength-building calcium. Casein, a protein found in milk products, fortifies the surfaces of teeth to help prevent cavities. For the main course, green beans are often served as a side dish. This year, rinse your green beans in sesame oil. Rinsing with sesame oil in place of mouthwash has been shown to reduce the effects of plaque and even, in some cases, to reverse the effects of gingivitis. In addition, we can’t forget about dessert. We suggest whipping something up that contains pears and honey, because pears have been shown to neutralize acid on the surface of the teeth, while honey acts as a natural antiseptic. Surely you have to wash all these delicious dishes down with something, so stick to tap water because tap water contains fluoride which reverses damage to enamel caused by acids.

Cleaning Your Tongue

When you think about taking care of your oral health, you probably think about your teeth and gums. But did you know that you tongue should get just as much attention? At Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, we are reminding patients to brush their tongue and letting them know why it is important.

Our tongues can become harbors for bacteria. The whitish film that builds up on it every day is from our food, drinks, and saliva. Removing it helps keep a cleaner mouth. It helps keep away plaque build-up which keeps away cavities and gum disease. In addition, keeping a clean tongue is a great way to avoid bad breath. Bacteria are what cause bad odor and the more you remove, the more fresh your breath will be.

Clean your tongue after brushing and flossing your teeth. To clean your tongue, you can use your toothbrush or a tongue scraper. To use a toothbrush, put a small amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush and brush the tongue up and down and then side-to-side. Rinse the brush every couple of strokes to get rid of the bacterial film you are removing. You do not want to redeposit it. Tongue scrapers are sold in most places that sell dental supplies. There are metal ones and plastic ones. Take the scraper and drag it down your tongue, starting from the back. Be firm, but do not hurt yourself. After each stroke, rinse off the scraper. Rinse your mouth after you are done cleaning your tongue.

Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Halloween is here again and there is candy galore! While Halloween treats may be tasty, they can hurt your dental health if you let them. At Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, we want to remind our patients of how to enjoy a happy and healthy Halloween!

Candy is filled with sugar, which as we know, causes cavities. But mostly everything is fine in moderation. To limit the amount of sugar that your teeth are being exposed to, set a limit on the candy you eat each day. Pick a healthy number of candies and stick to it. In addition, make sure you are brushing your teeth two to three times per day and flossing once per day. Sticky candies are especially good at getting stuck between teeth, so have that floss ready! While brushing away the sugar is important, do wait at least thirty minutes after eating to brush. Food, especially sour gummies, has acid that softens the enamel on your teeth. If it is brushed right away, the enamel may become worn down.

For patients who have recent fillings, crowns, braces, or other similar dental appliances, stay away from sticky candies and caramel apples. Gum and taffy are infamous for pulling off crowns and brackets. Very hard treats should also be avoided for those with braces. The pressure from biting into it may cause a bracket to pop off. No one wants an emergency dental visit in the middle of trick-or-treating.

Follow these tips and you are sure to have a fun and healthy Halloween! To schedule a dental cleaning with Greenville Family Dentistry in our Greenville, TX office, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Effects of Poor Oral Hygiene

It is surprisingly easy to forget to brush your teeth. With the hustle and bustle of today’s world, we rush out the door in the morning, and fall asleep on the couch at night. But do you know the consequences of not making oral care a priority? At Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, we want our patients to know why a great oral hygiene routine is so important.

The point of brushing and flossing is to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth. Plaque can turn into tartar, a hardened material only removable by dentists, if it is not brushed away. Plaque and bacteria cause cavities, irritate the gums, and can lead to gum disease and tooth infections. These conditions can be painful and troublesome to fix.

Gum disease happens when bacteria irritates the gum line. Gums can turn red, puffy, and irritated. The plaque and tartar can get in between the teeth and the gums and form pockets. These pockets become deep, allowing bacteria to reach further down, and causing the gums to pull away from the teeth. This level of serious gum disease is difficult to get rid of. It is painful, unsightly, and causes bad breath. Left untreated, it will cause infections and loss of teeth. Infected teeth through decay can also cause gum disease. In addition, it can destroy a tooth and become abscessed. An abscessed tooth will continue destruction below the surface, damaging bone and gum tissue.

Brushing your teeth two or three times per day, flossing once per day, and regularly visiting your dentist will ensure a healthy mouth. To schedule your appointment with Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

How to Keep a White Smile

Look your best this fall by keeping those pearly whites white! There are many at-home ways of protecting the natural color of your teeth or making them shine brighter than ever before! At Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, we want to offer our tips and tricks to keeping a white smile.

The first rule for avoiding stains and discoloration of your smile is to keep it clean! A great oral hygiene routine is important to keep away stain-causing debris. Foods, drinks, and plaque can stain our teeth if they are not cleaned regularly. In addition, plaque is sticky and can hold in stain-causers close to our teeth. That is why it is important to brush two to three times per day and floss once per day.

After drinking dark liquids or eating dark foods, make sure to rinse your mouth out. You should wait at least thirty minutes after consuming anything but water to brush your teeth. This preserves the enamel. However, rinsing with water will help deter any stains from sticking and it will not hurt your enamel. In addition to rinsing afterward, drink your dark liquids through a straw to minimize contact. Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco if you want a bright smile. These habits will absolutely darken teeth over time.

In addition to these tips for avoiding stains, a professional teeth whitening can help you get to where you want to be. To schedule an appointment with us at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call our office at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Frenectomy for Lip Tie and Tongue Tie in Greenville, TX

Lip tie or tongue tie is a condition that can majorly inhibit a baby’s ability to feed. Later in life it can cause complications, as well. Fortunately, there is a simple solution call a frenectomy. At Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, we perform frenectomies for infants, children, and adults.

Lip tie and tongue tie are the conditions where the frenulum, the piece of tissue that connects the lips to the gums and the tongue to the floor of the mouth, is short or tight. This creates a small range of motion for the lips or tongue which can prevent proper feeding. This can cause low-weight in babies and pain for breastfeeding mothers. Later in life, lip tie and tongue tie can affect things such as eating, cleanliness, speech, and kissing.

A frenectomy is a very quick procedure with little or no discomfort. The frenulum is numbed and it is detached using a scalpel or a laser. This allows the frenulum to heal with more range. Healing time is minimal with very minor discomfort.

To learn more about the frenectomy procedure, contact Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX. We are committed to helping our patients make healthy and informed oral decisions. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Sedation Options at Greenville Family Dentistry

Comfort of our patients is one of our top concerns. This is why here at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, we offer our patients sedation options. We like our patients to have a relaxing and fear-free dental visit.

We know that dental anxiety can keep our patients from getting the care they need. We have a couple of different types of sedation available in our Greenville, TX dental practice to aid in easing the anxiety they feel. Each type of sedation option allows you to drive yourself to and from the appointment.

Anxiolysis is an oral sedative like valium. It is an easy, light sedative recommended for those with mild to moderate dental anxiety. You are awake during the procedure but you are much more relaxed.

We also have nitrous oxide available. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is breathed in; you will feel the effects pretty quickly. Nitrous oxide is very common and is often referred to as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide also allows the patient to be awake for their procedure but in a much more relaxed state.

If you have been avoiding a dental procedure due to nervousness or fear, ask us about our sedation options. To schedule an appointment in our Greenville, TX dental practice, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit the Greenville Family Dentistry website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

How to Fight Bad Breath

Bad breath can be stubborn and reoccurring when you do not know how to avoid it. Greenville Family Dentistry knows how frustrating bad breath can be and wants to let our patients know some tips and tricks for getting rid of it! We’re freshening the breath of Greenville, TX one by one!

While onions and garlic may commonly stain breath, bad breath is often caused by bacteria. In order to clear up the foul odor, the bacteria must be eliminated and avoided. The first step for fresh breath is a clean mouth.

Make sure you are brushing your teeth two or three times per day and flossing once every day. In addition, brushing your tongue or investing in a tongue scraper will help get rid of a lot of bacteria!

Keep your whistle wet. When the mouth dries out, especially overnight, bacteria have the chance to thrive. This is why we often wake up with less than pleasant breath. Make sure to keep hydrated and avoid drinks that dehydrate such as alcohol and caffeine.

When you need something extra to combat the stink or do not have your oral care supplies on hand, chewing parsley or mint leaves may help the odor. Also, chewing lemon rinds will stimulate saliva and moisten your mouth. In addition, green tea both keeps you hydrated and it deodorizes the bacteria that cause bad breath.

If you find yourself in a smelly situation, make sure to try some of these tips! To schedule an appointment with Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

How to Brush Your Teeth Correctly

When taking care of your mouth at home, it is good to know that you are doing the right things. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, we want our patients to know the correct way to brush teeth so it is helpful; not harmful.

Brushing should be done two or three times per day. Two times is the minimum, but brushing excessively may actually harm the teeth. In addition, you should always wait at least a half an hour after eating to brush your teeth. The acid in foods can soften teeth, and when brushed right away, this may wear away enamel.

Brushing should be done with a light touch. Abrasive brushing may wear down enamel and irritate gums. In order to remove plaque and other debris, a light touch is all that is needed.

When brushing your teeth, make sure to make it last for a full two minutes. All surfaces of your teeth need attention; the insides, the fronts, the chewing surfaces, and the backs of the back molars. Also brush your tongue, the roof of your mouth, and the insides of your cheeks!

Taking care of your mouth at home is just as important as routine visits to the dentist! To schedule your cleaning in our Greenville, TX dental office, call Greenville Family Dentistry at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Diagnosis of Bruxism

Some people grind their teeth only during sleep. This is called “nocturnal bruxism” or “sleep-related bruxism.” Others grind or clench their teeth during the daytime as well. Grinding of your teeth, also known as bruxism can have a variety of causes. Some experts view bruxism as nothing more than a habit. It can also be a result of the body’s reaction when the teeth do not line up or come together properly. If you experience signs and symptoms of bruxism, Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry can provide you with an individualized treatment plan.

When diagnosing bruxism, Dr. Christopher Emuedue will ask about your general dental health, what sources of stress you have in your life, and what medicines you take. He will examine you, paying special attention to the muscles in and around your jaw. He will also look at your teeth for evidence of grinding. During this examination, Dr. Christopher Emuedue will check for tenderness in your jaw muscles and the jaw joint. A more detailed exam may follow if your dentist suspects that your bruxism is related to dental problems.

If you have any questions about bruxism or would like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Christopher Emuedue, please give our Greenville Family Dentistry office in Greenville, TX a call at 903-455-6701. Hidden Dangers of Sleep Apnea

Snoring may seem comical, but obstructive sleep apnea is no joke. It can increase your risk of high blood pressure and diabetes – and even make you more dangerous on the road. Although sleep apnea has many dangers, we’ll discuss a few. At Greenville Family Dentistry, Dr. Christopher Emuedue can treat sleep apnea with two oral surgery procedures depending on the severity of the case.

Obstructive sleep apnea can contribute to high blood pressure in people who have it. The frequent nighttime awakenings that plague people with sleep apnea cause hormonal systems to go into overdrive, which results in high blood pressure levels at night. People with obstructive sleep apnea are also more likely to suffer heart attacks and die in the middle of the night. The causes may be low oxygen or the stress of waking up often during sleep. Weight gain plays another role in the hidden dangers of sleep apnea. Adding weight raises your risk of sleep apnea, and up to two-thirds of people with sleep apnea are severely overweight. Obstructive sleep apnea can often be cured if you lose enough weight, but that can be tough to do.

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, schedule a consultation with us to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about sleep apnea, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

Types of Dental Implants

A dental implant is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed. They are used to secure crowns, bridgework or dentures by a variety of means. Dental implants are permanent and look and feel like real teeth. There are two different types of dental implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. At Greenville Family Dentistry, Dr. Christopher Emuedue can perform the entire implant process over a course of two months.

Endosteal (in the bone) is the most commonly used type of implant. The various types include screws, cylinders or blades, surgically placed into the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This type of implant is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures. Subperiosteal (on the bone) implants are placed on top of the jawbone under the gum tissue. However, subperiosteal implants are no longer in use today because of their poor long-term results in comparison to endosteal implants.

If you're experiencing discomfort in a tooth, don't ignore it; schedule a consultation to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about dental implants, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

Tips for a Healthy Mouth

Keeping your mouth clean is vital to the health of your oral cavity as well as the health of many of the body’s systems. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX we want to give our patients some tips for a healthy mouth.

Brushing and flossing are the first and foremost important parts of an oral hygiene routine. When plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar and cause decay. Plaque starts to form hours after brushing and flossing. This is why it is important to brush two to three times per day. This is also why it is important to floss every single day. Remember to brush your cheeks, the roof of your mouth, and your tongue as bacteria can build up in all of these places, as well.

Brushing and flossing should be done once in the morning, once before bed, and once during the day, if possible. However, brushing should be done a half an hour after eating. The acids in our food can cause enamel to wear down when our teeth are brushed immediately after eating them.

Along with a daily oral care routine, regular visits to your dentist are also part of having a healthy mouth. Make sure to schedule your exam and cleaning! If you have been experiencing redness of the gums, tooth sensitivity, or pain when chewing, these are definite signs that an examination by your dentist is needed.

Dental Crown to Restore Your Teeth and Restore Your Smile

A fractured tooth or a tooth weakened by decay can diminish the look of your smile. For a tooth that needs some extra strength, but still has a strong tooth root, Greenville Family Dentistry offers dental crowns here in our Greenville, TX dental practice.

A cracked or weakened tooth can leave dark spots or discoloration on the tooth. It can also leave the tooth misshapen and susceptible to infection. Dental crowns are like a cap that goes over the whole tooth to strengthen it, repair the look of it, and protect it from infection and further damage. The crown can be made of gold, porcelain-covered metal, or all porcelain. The options with porcelain are great for repairing the look of your smile. The crown is custom made to look and feel just like a normal tooth, so it will blend right in with your smile. We will first reshape the tooth and take impressions of the tooth and the area surrounding it so that the newly created crown will fit just right.

Restore your weakened tooth with a dental crown and return your smile to its former glory. To schedule a consultation here at our Greenville, TX dental practice, call (903) 455-6701 or visit the Greenville Family Dentistry website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Replacing a missing tooth is important for many aspects of your oral health. A popular option here at Greenville Family Dentistry is the dental bridge. The dental bridge is a long-lasting option for tooth replacement that restores your oral health and your smile!

Dental bridges affix a replacement tooth to dental crowns which will go over the teeth adjacent to where the open space is. The replacement tooth is often snugged between two crowns, which is why it is referred to as a bridge. Bridges can be made to look just like your natural teeth, so it will blend right in with your smile.

A dental bridge is custom-created for each individual by reshaping the enamel on the teeth the crowns will be placed onto, and taking an impression of the reshaped teeth, the open space, and the area around it. This is to ensure that the bridge will have the perfect fit and the perfect bite.

Replacing a tooth that has been lost or extracted is important for your other teeth, your jaw, and your gums. The replacement tooth will prevent the other teeth from shifting toward the open space. Also, when a tooth is lost, the bone in that area begins to degenerate and change the shape of the jaw. When you replace the tooth, this will no longer happen, and your jaw and gums will continue to be healthy and normal.

To learn if a dental bridge is the right fit for you, schedule a consultation at Greenville Family Dentistry here in Greenville, TX. To schedule, call (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Treatment for Sleep Apnea in Greenville, TX

Sleep apnea can be a tiresome and dangerous condition to wrestle with daily. However, you do not need to live with it anymore. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX we provide several treatment options for our patients suffering from the complications of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and liver disease. Not to mention, it causes severe fatigue for both the person suffering from sleep apnea and their sleeping partner.

We perform three different oral surgeries to solve sleep apnea. The first procedure is called an uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. This procedure consists of removing excess tissue in the throat to open up the airway. Maxillomandibular advancement is another surgical option we have for sleep apnea. This procedure involves moving the upper and lower jaws forward, away from the rest of the facial bones. This creates a larger space behind the soft palate. A tracheostomy is the last procedure we have for sleep apnea. This is usually treated as a last resort. A tracheostomy works by inserting a tube into the front of the throat for breathing while sleeping. The tube is covered during the day, and then opened up when it’s time to sleep. Sleep apnea is a difficult and frustrating condition to live with. If appliances and other treatments have failed to help you, come to Greenville Family Dentistry to see if oral surgery may help you!

Flossing Refresher

Flossing is vital to protect the in-between surfaces of your teeth. Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX wants to provide a quick refresher on how to floss to help your next visit be cavity-free!

To start flossing, take about eighteen inches of floss and wrap the two ends around your middle fingers for a tight grip. Leave about two inches in between your hands to floss with. You should use a new section of floss for each time you go in between teeth, so rotate the floss as you go. Make sure to get in between all of your teeth; do not leave any out.

The proper way to floss is by sliding the floss between two teeth and rubbing the floss back and forth until you reach your gums. Do not hit your gums with the floss hard, as this could injure your gums. Instead use a gentle swooping motion at your gum line, and then continue rubbing the floss all the way back up and out. Do this same process every time.

Flossing should be done every day. There are some who like to floss after brushing, and some who like to floss before. Studies have shown that it really does not matter when you floss, any time will get the job done. It is just important to clean the teeth of the plaque that builds up and can cause decay.

For your routine teeth cleaning, schedule an appointment with Greenville Family Dentistry here in Greenville, TX. Call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com.

Dental Bonding for White Fillings and a Restored Smile

Filling cavities is necessary to restore a decayed tooth and to prevent further damage. However, sometimes the cavity fillings of the past left noticeable spots or discoloration on the teeth. Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX offers dental bonding as an alternative to silver amalgam fillings and as an option to restore discolored teeth!

Dental bonding is a tooth-colored composite resin. The color of the resin is picked out by your dentist to match the color of your natural teeth, or an even brighter color, if desired. For a cavity, the normal cavity drilling takes place. The decayed part of the tooth is removed and the bonding is used as the filling. The bonding may be hardened using an ultraviolet light.

In addition to more attractive fillings and whitening teeth, dental bonding can be used to fix gaps, cracks, and misaligned teeth. To apply the bonding, first the tooth is lightly etched to aid a strong bond. The resin is painted onto the tooth and smoothed over into the desired shape. The ultraviolet light is used to harden the material, just like with a filling. Dental bonding is long lasting. With good care, it is not uncommon for it to last over ten years.

If you have discolored, gapped, cracked, or misaligned teeth, come see us to discuss how dental bonding can give you a brand new smile! To schedule an appointment at our Greenville, TX location, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit our Greenville Family Dentistry website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Arestin for Around-the-Clock Bacteria Fighting

Having a scaling and planing procedure is a good way to clear a tooth and its surrounding gums of harmful bacteria, but what if you could clean it even further? Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX offers patients around-the-clock bacteria fighting by adding the antibiotic, Arestin, to the pockets caused by gum disease.

When gum disease causes irritated gums to pull away from the teeth and create deep pockets, during a scaling and planing, sometimes all of the bacteria is hard to reach. This is where Arestin comes in. Arestin is an antibiotic made of time-released microspheres. The microspheres release the antibiotic over time, so it keeps working to kill bacteria long after the application.

Arestin is usually administered after a scaling and planing procedure has been performed. The microspheres are applied into the deep pockets of gums and are so small; they are invisible to the human eye. They dissolve on their own, so they never need to be taken out.

As we know, gum disease can lead to a multitude of oral problems, and can eventually lead to the loss of a tooth. With Arestin, beating gum disease is more successful.

If you have red, swollen, or bleeding gums, be sure to schedule an examination here at our Greenville, TX location. To schedule, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit the Greenville Family Dentistry website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Extraction Site Preservation

After the extraction of a tooth, it is important to replace the tooth so there is no open space. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry of Greenville, TX, we understand the importance and understand every situation is different. This is why we offer several options for extraction site preservation.

The missing structure of a tooth could result in the degeneration of the jaw, shifting teeth, and gum irritation. All of these can change the appearance of your smile, and even your facial structure. Problems with eating and talking may also arise.

One of the options available is a dental bridge. This is created by reshaping the enamel of the adjacent teeth to the missing tooth, and then putting crowns on those teeth with a replacement tooth in the middle. Bridges are long lasting. They must be applied before the teeth shift.

Another option is a dental implant. Dental implants are surgically installed and are permanent replacements. With good care, they can last a lifetime. They can also be made to look and feel just like the rest of your natural teeth.

For patients with many or all of their teeth missing, we offer full (conventional and immediate) and partial dentures. These are also durable and long lasting. Dentures can be taken out whenever desired.

If you are having one or more teeth extracted, make sure to talk with us about your best option for replacement. To schedule, call us at (903) 455-6701 or visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com

Sports Mouthguards

When it comes to protecting your mouth during physical activity, especially during contact sports, a mouthguard is an essential piece of equipment everyone should own. While collision and contact sports, such as boxing and football are higher-risk sports for the mouth, patients can suffer a dental injury during non-contact activities too. The best, most protective mouthguard is one that has been custom-made for your mouth. That’s why our dentist, Dr. Christopher Emuedue offers custom sports mouthguards to patients of all ages at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX.

You might be wondering what the benefits of custom-mouthguards are compared to a stock mouthguard or a “boil and bite” option. Mouthguards created by a dental professional such as Dr. Emuedue are based on a mold taken of your mouth, which means they only fit your mouth. Custom mouthguards are made of resilient and tear resistant materials, ensuring a proper fit for ultimate comfort. A properly fitting mouthguard must be comfortable, odorless, tasteless and most importantly, protective.

Dr. Emuedue encourages patients to let him know if they participate in contact-oriented sports. He is able to layout the risks of injury to the teeth, jaw and oral soft tissues (mouth, lip, tongue, and cheeks) to help educate patients. From there, Dr. Emuedue will discuss your protective options and create a plan of care to keep your teeth safe.

To learn more about custom sports mouth guards, visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com. If you are interested in scheduling a consultation with Dr. Christopher Emuedue here at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX please call (903) 455-6701.

Ridge Augmentation

When you are considering dental implants, your dentist is going to test to see if you are a legitimate candidate. Dr. Christopher Emuedue uses dental implants for patients who have gum disease or problem teeth, currently wear dentures or have bone loss. One issue that comes up quite often is patients not have enough bone in their jaw to support an implant.  A certain amount of bone is required to support the implant and if you do not have the required amount, we will expose the bony defect and fill the area with bone or bone substitute through a procedure called ridge augmentation.

Ridge augmentation procedures can improve appearance and increase your chances for successful implant placement.  In this procedure, the bony ridge of the jaw is literally expanded by mechanical means. Bone graft material can be placed and matured for a few months before placing the implant. We have many options for bone grafting materials including bone from your own body, a cadaver, cow bone or synthetic material.

Ridge Augmentation is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. If you are missing teeth and do not have the bone to support a dental implant, please consider this procedure. You can set up an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue by visiting our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com or by calling (903) 455-6701.

Digital X-Rays

Digital radiography is one of the most technologically advanced products available to the medical field today. While traditional systems are effective, there are many features of digital X-ray machines that help create a better overall image of your mouth. Not many dentists have taken advantage of this technology and are still utilizing traditional radiography technology.  We have recently implemented this technology into our practice in order to provide a better level of care to our patients.

Traditional X-ray systems are being surpassed by digital radiography technology. While this old technology was very effective for a number of years, it is slowly becoming nonexistent in the medical field. Digital X-Ray technology has many benefits including:

  • Safety – this technology is much safer for patients because they emit roughly 80 percent less radiation than traditional systems

  • “Going Green” – instant imaging removes the need for harmful chemicals that are used to develop images

  • High Quality – the images Dr. Emuedue receives from this technology are much higher quality, allowing him diagnose previously unseen issues

While the radiation given off from the older systems is not necessarily dangerous, it is always risky to expose someone to radiation. Digital radiography has become a great resource for patients who want an effective X-ray without the negative effects that could come from radiation exposure.

Since Dr. Christopher Emuedue doesn’t have to take time to develop images, your procedure time is considerably shorter. In addition, thanks to the improved, higher quality images provided by digital X-rays, Dr. Emuedue is able to diagnose patients more effectively. Early detection is the best way for you to avoid potentially invasive, costly dental procedures that wouldn’t have been necessary if the symptoms were found earlier.

Intraoral Camera

Correct patient diagnosis and treatment is the most important function of an effective, state-of-the-art dental practice. The intraoral camera is the latest in a long line of technologically advanced equipment that has been introduced to the dental field in recent years. It delivers incredibly sharp, clear images that enhance our ability to properly diagnose and treat patients.

The innovative imaging software that accompanies the intraoral camera is perfect for viewing the nooks and crannies missed by X-rays. While the camera snaps crystal-clear images throughout the mouth, the software allows the doctors to manipulate the image to see different angles and zoom in on an otherwise static image. The camera also takes videos that can be streamed to a bedside monitor. Patients are able to view their procedure in real-time. Thanks to this innovative technology, Dr. Christopher Emuedue able to clearly explain what the problem is and how they can best treat it together.

When our team utilizes the intraoral camera, they are able to reach places that an X-ray cannot. While X-rays are extremely effective for locating cavities and decay, the intraoral camera lets us see things we’d never be able to see. Although a traditional visual inspection of the teeth may have sufficed in the past, technology has made it possible for dentists and patients to reap many more benefits from each health exam.

For more information on the intraoral camera or any of our services, please call Greenville Family Dentistry at (903) 455-6701 or visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com.

Bone Grafting

Dental implants are an excellent option to replace a missing tooth. In some cases, before you can have an implant, you may need to have bone grafting surgery. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we offer our patients the latest advances in bone grafting.

Bone grafting may be needed in order to build up the jawbone before an implant is placed. There are two types of bone grafting surgery, which may be performed depending on the extent of grafting needed. For example, in some cases, large changes to the dental ridge may be needed. In other instances, bone grafting may be needed to ensure there is enough bone to cover the sides of the implant.

In many cases, bone fragments are taken from another area of the body and transplanted onto the existing jawbone. Bone from a tissue bank or mineral bone substitutes can also be used. Bone grafting makes the jawbone better able to support an implant, which increases the success of the procedure.

At Greenville Family Dentistry, we offer preventive, restorative and cosmetic dental services for your entire family. We strive to provide you with the best possible dental care and the most advanced technology.

For more information on bone grafting, or in order to schedule an appointment, please call our office at (903) 455-6701.

Root Canals

When patients are informed that they need a root canal procedure, they often become very fearful and do not want to undergo the procedure. The misconception that root canals are painful, cause illness or will cause further damage to their teeth is decades old and holds no truth. Science has come a long way since the first root canal procedure occurred in the 1700’s. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we offer pain-free root canal procedures.

The whole point of a root canal procedure is to alleviate pain, not cause more. Root canals are performed by removing the pulp of the tooth that has become inflamed, infected or dead. The pulp is a soft substance that is in the center of the tooth, it consists of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. The most common causes of pulp damage are cracked tooth, deep cavity and an injury to a tooth. Dr. Emuedue this procedure to save a tooth that is badly decayed and would otherwise be extracted.

After your root canal, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth. People also think that a root canal procedure is an invasive procedure that takes hours to complete. Modern root canal procedures are often compared to having a routine filling and can be completed in just one visit.

If you have any questions about this procedure, feel free to ask Dr. Emuedue during your consultation.

Lumineers

Lumineers are an ultra-thin type of veneers that help improve your smile by covering imperfections of your teeth. There are many reasons our patients here at Greenville Family Dentistry choose Lumineers, including covering staining or discoloration, to eliminate gaps and spaces, to correct misalignment of teeth, and to reshape teeth that are misshapen.

The Lumineers are made from very thin pieces of porcelain that are bonded securely to the teeth. The quality and end result is the same as veneers, except there is better comfort among patients choosing Lumineers from our dentist Dr. Emuedue. As a thinner version of veneers, they provide patients with many benefits.

Traditional veneers require reshaping and filing down of the natural tooth prior to fitting on the veneer. With Lumineers, less preparation work needs to be done to the teeth because they are much thinner. Patients benefit by losing less of their natural teeth, completing the procedure in less time, and paying less for the cosmetic treatment. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry, we offer Lumineers as a great option for restoring your smile.

Rotary Endodontics

If you’ve had a root canal performed to save an infected tooth, it probably didn’t occur to you to ask what type of tools your dentist was using. However, if your dentist used the old, manual method of removing infection, the procedure may have been nerve racking. That’s why our team here at Greenville Family Dentistry uses rotary endodontics technology for root canals.

Proving a smoother, more comfortable experience during root canals, rotary endodontics technology allows Dr. Emuedue to remove the infected pulp in the inner root canal more quickly, more smoothly and with less chance of complications. Rotary endodontics utilizes electric instruments, rather than the traditional, stainless steel files. The electric hand tool is made of nickel titanium and is much more flexible than stainless steel, which means that it can be inserted into the curved root canal without damaging the passageway.

We prefer to use rotary endodontics at our practice because it is smoother, more consistent and quicker than the traditional method. In addition, the tools are much quieter, without the grinding noise that other tools produce, which will help to put you at ease during the procedure. This is why both our patients and we prefer this technology. While the manual method works adequately at saving teeth during root canals, rotary endodontics tools are much less scary and easier to use.

Gum Disease

Caring for your teeth is an essential part of maintaining good oral health, but your gums also play an important role in your health, and proper care is crucial. Gum disease can be a serious detriment to your oral health and overall wellness. Our team here at Greenville Family Dentistry provides the type of regular periodontal care and checkups you need to maintain peak health and prevent gum disease.

With periodontal disease responsible for 75 percent of all adult tooth loss cases in the United States, it is critical to check for and treat periodontal issues when they first arise. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that starts when a build-up of plaque on your teeth hardens, providing the ideal environment for bacteria to collect and attack surrounding gums. In its early stages, this gum disease is gingivitis, but if it is left untreated, it becomes periodontitis. Periodontitis can destroy your gum tissue and lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis can even result in a loss of bone mass in your jawbone, and heart disease, diabetes and stroke have also been linked to poor periodontal health.

The state of your gums affects the health of your entire body, so come to our office in Greenville, TX to receive periodontal cleanings and treatment. It is easier to prevent gum disease or treat it early on than to reverse the effects of periodontitis. For more information about gum disease, please call Greenville Family Dentistry at 903-455-6701.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Are you due for your oral cancer screening? If you’re over fifty, use tobacco products and have a family member who’s been diagnosed, you are probably due for an oral cancer screening.  Even if you have a clean bill of health, older adults should make oral cancer screenings a regular part of their yearly health exams.

Oral cancer can have a devastating effect, but if it’s caught in its earliest stages, chances of full recovery are significantly improved. We use a variety of comprehensive and advanced technology that gives us full insight into your oral health, and that includes detection of any abnormalities or problem areas that could easily go undetected.

If you’re not sure whether or not you’re due for an oral cancer screening or if you’re an adult who’s never had one, it’s better to yield on the side of caution. We look forward to your visit for a comprehensive exam and giving you the peace of mind and information you need to protect and preserve your health. Visit our website, www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information or call (903) 455-6701 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Emuedue.

Sealants

Good oral hygiene is the first step to protecting your teeth and having less tooth decay, but sometimes it isn’t enough to have healthy teeth. Along with brushing and flossing twice a day and visiting our dental office every six months, we also provide dental sealants. They are especially useful for children who have their molars, which come in between 5 and 7 years of age, and again between 11 and 14 years of age.

Dental sealants protect the molars from cavities and tooth decay. The molars are most susceptible to cavities because they are chewed on most often, and decay because they are harder to reach with a toothbrush and dental floss. Dr. Christopher Emuedue can put a liquid sealant on these teeth that hardens and further protects to teeth from excessive decay. It can last about 10 years before needing to be applied again.

Patients of all ages visit us here at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX for dental sealants. It reduces the amount of work that needs to be done on the teeth over time and gives patients a healthy looking smile. Visit us online at www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com today to learn more about sealants or give us a call at 903-455-6701

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Your wisdom teeth are your last set of molars to emerge, and they usually come in when you are between 17 and 21 years old. Because these teeth can become impacted, which means they come in at an angle rather than straight through the gums, it is often necessary for them to be removed before they cause pain or crowd your other teeth. At our office in Greenville, TX, Dr. Christopher Emuedue can determine if your wisdom teeth need to be removed and extract them if they do.

If a wisdom tooth is impacted and can only emerge partially, it is possible for an operculum to form over the tooth. This flap of skin makes the molar extremely hard to clean, which means you are susceptible to an infection called periocoronitis.

When a wisdom tooth is in danger of causing such problems, either Dr. Emuedue will extract the tooth. Many times all four are removed at once. This is done either by using a local anesthetic to numb the area or a general anesthetic to sedate the patient. It depends on the preference of the doctor and patient, as well as how far the wisdom tooth has emerged. After an anesthetic is applied, the gum tissue over the wisdom tooth is cut and the tooth is loosened and pulled out. If necessary, the gums will be sutured.

After surgery, rest is required. You will also need to change the gauze applied to the incision every couple hours.

Scaling and Root Planing

If your teeth are sensitive or your gums bleed when you floss or brush, you might be suffering from gingivitis or gum disease. If you’re not taking care of your oral hygiene, the bacteria and plaque can advance to gum disease and it becomes more difficult to treat. While gum disease sounds like a scary thing, the good news is that there are treatment options available.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. There are many different forms of periodontal disease but all of them can cause serious damage to the mouth. The mildest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis causes the gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily. The biggest cause of gingivitis is lack of a regular oral hygiene regimen. Preventative measures, such as regular brushing and flossing, go a long way when it comes to preventing periodontal disease. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral health practices at home.

At Lewelling Dental Care, we offer a non-surgical, non-invasive option known as scaling and root planning for those who have gum disease. This deep cleaning procedure is a great alternative to surgical options. Scaling involves removing built-up plaque below the gum line using either manual scraping instruments or an ultrasonic tool. When we do your root planing, we essentially gently sand your teeth, removing rough spots on the tooth surfaces and roots, which tend to harbor bacteria.

If you fear that you might be suffering from gingivitis or gum disease, set up an appointment with one of our skilled dentists at our Greenville, TX dental practice so we can go over treatment options.
