Dental Cleanings

It is recommended by the Academy of General Dentistry you have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  Greenville Family Dentistry encourages our patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, our hygienists thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.

If you need your teeth cleaned, don’t wait any longer.  To learn more about regular dental cleanings and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. Oral Cancer Screenings

The doctors and staff of Greenville Family Dentistry want you and your family to be aware of the risk of oral cancer.  We encourage you to ask about an oral cancer screening with each dental checkup.  Heavy smoking and drinking of course increase the risk of oral cancer, but oral cancer can still occur if someone never smokes.  In fact, the human papilloma virus (HPV) was recently found to be responsible for most oral cancers that originated in the back of the mouth.

To screen for oral cancer, our doctors perform a visual exam and use an ultraviolet light device to detect any cancerous irregularities in tissue.  This exam can be done in a short length of time and in addition to any dental appointment.  Regular screenings are the best way to protect you and your family, but always contact us if you notice any inexplicable pain, swelling, or numbness in your throat or jaw.

Preventive Dentistry Refresher

The dental appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry is a very important part of preventive dental care, but prevention starts at home. The most important preventive technique should be utilized every day which includes brushing and flossing at least twice a day (or after every meal) to reduce plaque. If plaque is left on the teeth, this can lead to periodontal disease and other dental complications.

Preventive measures include eating a healthy diet, visiting our dental office twice a year for routine checkups, practicing proper oral hygiene habits at home, and avoiding cigarettes and alcohol. Foods containing sugar can cause tooth decay. Instead, choose foods that are more beneficial to teeth, like cheese, fruit, nuts, and vegetables. Additionally, poor oral hygiene habits, as well as smoking and drinking, can negatively impact your oral health.

Anxiolysis

Dr. Christopher Emuedue and his staff have seen many patients struggle with some degree of dental anxiety.  The fear that arises for these patients with any dental appointment may be caused by a previous negative experience during a dental procedure.  Other patients have a sensitive gag reflex that always makes dental work dreadful.  Whatever the cause, our office offers anxiolysis to relax nervous patients and ease fears so necessary dental work is not delayed.

Anxiolysis is administered by taking a pill orally before the appointment. The medication is a light sedative, such as valium.  It will relax a patient during a procedure but still allow the patient to drive themselves home after the appointment. This sedation option is recommended for those with mild to moderate anxiety. The important thing is that our patients do not put off necessary dental work and expose themselves to further risk because of an anxiety.

Flossing Properly

At the dental office of Dr. Christopher Emuedue, we want you and your family to continue healthy oral care routines at home. Regular flossing is essential to maintaining oral health and you should floss once a day, either before or after brushing. To get the most benefit out of flossing, remember these tips:

  • Using a strand of dental floss about 18 inches long allows you to use a clean portion of floss between each tooth.

  • Wrapping the ends of the floss around a finger on each of your hands gives you the best control.

  • To floss, slide the floss between each tooth and rub the floss back and forth up until you reach your gums.

  • Pushing at your gums too hard with floss can cause damage, and isn’t necessary to floss properly. Gently rub the floss up to one gum, then down and back up towards the other.

  • As you move on to the next tooth, adjust the floss to expose an unused portion.

  • Repeat this rubbing motion between each tooth and behind the back teeth.

Tooth Extraction

When a tooth needs to be extracted a patient typically becomes anxious to complete the procedure and get it over with. Having a tooth pulled is sometimes necessary to remove decay or dental damage. Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry will discuss sedation options during a consultation and explain the entire process in detail to assure the patient is as comfortable as possible before, during, and after.

Teeth may be extracted to make room for orthodontics, or to remove a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. The most common type of extraction is wisdom teeth. This is because wisdom teeth can lead to infection. The procedure involves cutting the tooth and gently rocking it back-and-forth to loosen it from the jawbone. To ensure that the stitches don’t break after surgery, Dr. Emuedue will give you strict post-op instructions to follow once the procedure is complete.

If you have questions or concerns about tooth extraction, please give us a call. Pediatric Dentistry in Greenville, TX

It is important that your child visits the dentist before his or her first birthday. Doing so prevents dental disease and decay that might develop in the future. Additionally, visiting a pediatric dentist like Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry is beneficial to parents because Dr. Emuedue can educate them on proper oral hygiene for infants, toddlers, and children.

Cavities are most common in children, which is why it’s important to clean their gums with a moist cloth before teeth erupt to wash away harmful sugars. Children should maintain a healthy diet to fight against tooth decay, bad breath, and periodontal disease. Our dental team can answer any questions you may have about pediatric dental services and we assure to make you and your child as comfortable as possible during their oral health journey.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

Do you see blood in the water when you spit out your toothpaste? If so, that’s a problem. Gingivitis, or inflamed gums, is a common ailment, but it’s an ailment all the same and requires treatment and preventive effort.

Sometimes, people’s gums can bleed if they are brushing too hard with a hard-bristled brush. But in most cases, bleeding is the result of infection. Bacteria are always growing in the mouth and are often beneficial or harmless, but they can easily grow out of control in the gum pockets if they have enough food. Bacteria produce plaque around the gum line, which hardens into tartar. Acid sticks to plaque and tartar, irritating the gums and causing them to bleed.

Some factors put people at greater risk: smoking, pregnancy, blood thinners, and dry mouth. The last one is a common medication side-effect. People in these situations need to be especially vigilant about their oral hygiene (remembering that brushing needs to be done consistently, but not too hard), and to come in regularly for professional cleanings.

Childhood Check-Ups

We highly value children’s preventive care at Greenville Family Dentistry. Everyone should get dental check-ups twice a year, but it’s especially important for children to keep up their oral hygiene. The consequences for them are particularly bad if they don’t.

Children are the primary demographic to suffer from cavities or caries, the little zones of decay in tooth enamel. Cavities are also the most common illness among children. Decay in both permanent and baby teeth is painful, making it a big problem for the child’s overall health. Young children suffering from tooth aches may have delays learning to speak. They also may avoid eating and be unable to sleep, leaving them tired and irritable in school and unable to concentrate on their lessons.

Cavities are easy to treat if they are caught soon enough, but through regular oral hygiene, they can be avoided entirely. If cavities are allowed to progress, however, the child may need replacement crowns or root canals. Regular dental check-ups also allow us to determine whether the child will need extractions or orthodontics in the future.

Dry Mouth

We’ve all experienced a dry mouth at some point or another. We may notice it when we wake up in the morning, or we may feel it if we are dehydrated. Dry mouth affects about 10% of our population and tends to be more common in women than men. If you are experiencing symptoms of extreme dry mouth, schedule a consultation with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry to discuss your treatment options.

Dry mouth can be caused by a variety of factors. It can occur as a side effect of certain medication, or it may be due to a lack of saliva flow (dehydration). Dry mouth can lead to discomfort and dental problems if left untreated. If you notice a dry feeling in the mouth, frequent thirst, dry nasal passages, or mouth sores, Dr. Emuedue may need to explore treatment options with you.

If you have questions or concerns regarding dry mouth, please give us a call. Extrinsic Stains

Most of us can’t begin a day without a cup of coffee or end it with a glass of wine before bed. Though these beverages are fine in moderation, they can cause stains to develop on tooth enamel. These stains are known as extrinsic stains and they are easily removed by a teeth whitening session or a professional cleaning from Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry.

Beverages such as coffee, wine, and tea contain pigments that can stain the teeth. Because of the location of these stains, they are easier to remove than intrinsic stains which lay deep into the dentin. Dr. Christopher Emuedue may suggest a whitening treatment depending on the discoloration. Discoloration can range from a yellowish color to a dark brown. If the patient has no interesting in a whitening session, Dr. Emuedue can improve the color of your teeth with a professional cleaning.

Mouth Ulcers

A mouth ulcer is no fun, but patients can come to Greenville Family Dentistry for help managing their symptoms. While the cause of some ulcers is still being debated, there are others which could signal an oral health problem or which the patient should be made aware of.

Some ulcers are caused by the patient’s bite damaging the lining of their cheeks and lips. In these cases, the patient may need to undergo orthodontic work to get their teeth into a better position. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus-1. This virus is easily transferable and most people already have it, but during an outbreak, patients should be careful not to transfer bodily fluids from their mouths to their eyes and should avoid sharing cups and straws. Cankers are large white ulcers which doctors are still unsure of the cause of, but they are mainly found in teenagers and tend to occur when the patient is feeling stressed.

Unless they are being caused by physical irritation, ulcers usually clear up on their own after a month. But if they are painful, our office can provide patients with information about topical creams and antibiotics to get them under control.

Replacing Fillings

When patients suffer from caries, we’re ready to treat them at Greenville Family Dentistry with well-crafted, naturally colored fillings. Although it’s normal for teeth to be sensitive for a little while after decayed material is removed, a repaired tooth is much more comfortable than one with ongoing decay. However, there are situations in which pain from a filling warrants a close look.

If a filling is preventing the patient from biting down or from doing so without pain, it is probably too high and needs to be redone. Some doctors also use materials for fillings which shrink after placement, which creates a gap bacteria can enter. This allows the decay process to continue. But even when there is no initial problem with the filling, it will not last forever. Eventually, usually after about ten years, the seal holding the filling in will break down, allowing it to come loose or for bacteria to enter the seal. When this happens, the patient will need to have the filling replaced. If the decay has been allowed to progress, they may need a larger restoration, such as a partial crown.

Sugar and Teeth

Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry can provide patients with a list of benefits that water gives teeth, but when it comes to sugar, there are none. Sugar plays a harmful role in tooth decay because sugar contains acid that attacks tooth enamel. It’s not the sugar itself that does the damage, but rather the chain of events that occur after consumption. Allow us to explain.

There’s a constant battle of bacteria that occurs in the mouth on a daily basis. This is because the teeth are frequently under attack by acids. When you consume sugar, the sugar latches onto tooth enamel, though saliva washes the sugar away, these acids can linger. We encourage you to reduce sugar intake to prevent cavities. Keep your mouth as clean as possible by brushing at least twice a day, flossing and least once a day and visit our office at least twice a year for dental checkups.

Dry Sockets

When patients need to have teeth extracted, they’re in good hands at Greenville Family Dentistry. Extractions are a routine procedure and have a very high success rate. However, we do want our patients to be on the look-out for dry sockets and to know what to do should one develop.

After a simple extraction, a bit of the jawbone is exposed at the end of the empty socket. Ideally, the socket will quickly be sealed off with a blood clot, but there are some medications which interfere with clotting. This is why it is important for patients to disclose their full regimen of medications to us. The socket will close after a few days, but during that time, the clot must not be disturbed, or else the socket will dry out, causing pain and posing a risk of infection. Patients are always warned not to sip through straws for fear of dislodging the clot.

When dry sockets do develop, it is usually after a complicated extraction which required incisions and sutures. If a patient’s pain does not subside forty-eight hours after the extraction, they should return for an examination. We can treat a dry socket by cleaning and dressing it and will carefully monitor it afterward.

Cleaning Fixed Bridges

When patients at Greenville Family Dentistry get permanent bridges, we strive to ensure their new restorations last. Oral hygiene remains important for people with prosthetic teeth, but there are a few changes in habit they will need to make.

Keeping a fixed bridge clean of plaque requires that the gap between it and the gum line be flossed. To loop the floss around the bridge, patients will use a threader, which is a floppy device shaped like a sewing needle. People who have worn braces are already familiar with it. Patients might also be interested in specialty floss which has stiffened ends, allowing it to be pushed through the gap.

Christmas tree brushes, also known as proxy brushes, are another useful tool, particularly with implant-supported bridges which have larger gaps separating them from the gums. These brushes can be attached to longer handles for ease of use. Makers of electric toothbrushes and water picks are also manufacturing tips for use on implants, including those supporting multiple teeth.

Restorative Crowns

Greenville Family Dentistry offers crowns to repair smiles and restore function to a patient’s teeth.  Dental crowns are a restorative option for teeth that have a significant amount of decay or are at risk of being chipped.  A crown fits over the tooth like a little cap, and completely covers the tooth.

The process for installing a crown can usually be completed in two visits.  To prepare the tooth your dentist will remove any decay, and may need to reshape the remaining tooth to ensure a great fit for the new crown.  Once the tooth has been prepared, your dentist will take an impression of the area.  This impression is sent to a dental lab where the crown is fabricated.  Ask us about temporary options to wear while your new crown is being made.  Once your custom crown is made, the crown will be cemented into place by your dentist at a second appointment.  Our crowns blend right into your natural smile and can last a lifetime!

To learn more about crowns and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

Night Guards for Teeth Grinders

Bruxism is the term for any regular grinding of teeth or clenching of the jaw.  Many teeth grinders only do so at night and may not even realize it.  If you wake up with a sore jaw or a dull headache, these could be signs you are grinding your teeth at night and you should consult a dentist. Greenville Family Dentistry provides custom night guards to protect patient teeth from the negative effects of teeth grinding.

To outfit you with a new custom night guard, we begin with taking an impression of your mouth.  This impression is sent to a dental lab where your custom product will be fabricated and fit.  Ask us about temporary options to wear while your night guard is being made.  On your next visit you can bring your custom night guard home, and with correct care, it will last for 10 years.  The night guard will also help align the jaw and improve sleep!

To learn more about night guards and all the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

Bridges

Missing teeth wreak havoc on your mouth over time.  Gaps in the teeth can cause problems with eating and speech, and when a tooth is missing long enough the jaw bone is vulnerable and the structure becomes compromised. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we install permanent bridges that replace missing teeth and still look natural.

Permanent bridges use healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth to anchor a replacement in the appropriate location.  The replacement tooth is held in place by caps on the teeth on either side.  This can typically be accomplished in two visits.  First, an impression of the area is taken so that a dental laboratory can create a bridge that will fit perfectly.  While your new bridge is being fabricated, we can provide a temporary bridge for you to wear.  On your second visit, the bridge will be cemented into place.  With proper care bridges can last a lifetime, but can be replaced if needed.

What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure to remove a frenum, or muscular attachment between two tissues, from the mouth.  At Greenville Family Dentistry, frenectomies are performed to correct a number of issues patients may have with their teeth, lips, and tongue.

There are three main frenums in your mouth.  One is located underneath your tongue, and removing this is called a lingual frenectomy.  Patients with an enlarged frenum underneath their tongue will not be able to move their tongue freely.  This interferes with speech and is often called ‘tongue tie’. Lingual frenectomies are typically performed on young patients, who can recover quickly and continue to develop their speech.

Another two frenums in your mouth are between the font teeth (both upper and lower) and connects the inner surface of the lip with the gum. Removing this attachment is called a labial frenectomy.  Patients who have receding gums can benefit from this procedure, because a strong frenum from the gum to the lip can cause extra pulling on the gums and lead to further recession.

Intrinsic Stains

Visitors to Greenville Family Dentistry will notice that a lot of the discussion of cosmetic dentistry addresses stains on teeth. Whitening is a valuable service to people whose teeth are discolored by extrinsic stains, which are acquired through exposure to certain drinks or smoking, but sometimes discoloration is due to factors that are intrinsic, or on the inside.

Excessive fluoride exposure and certain drugs can cause changes in the color of the pulp, but usually, intrinsic stains are due to traumatic injury. They can still be covered by veneers or bonding, of course, but trauma isn’t just a cosmetic problem. It is likely the patient will need a root canal in order to remove inflamed or infected material, or else the infection may progress and cause pain. Bleaching the outside of a tooth will not cure an intrinsic injury and will do little to improve the tooth’s color. However, if a root canal is performed before traumatized tissue changes the tooth’s color, masking the tooth may not be necessary. Patients should also be aware that as they age, the enamel covering their teeth’s yellow inner layers will simply thin, and that this isn’t the same thing as having an infection. The advanced imaging systems in our office will help us get to the truth of the matter.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. To schedule an appointment, call 903-455-6701 or visit GreenvilleFamilyDentistryTX.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Bad Breath in Children

Bad breath in children is worth examining because it may lead to the detection of an underlying health issue. However, it could also simply be due to some of the specific challenges children have with oral hygiene, and at Greenville Family Dentistry, we want our patients of all ages to know how to keep their smiles fresh.

Contemporary dental advice for children stresses the need to brush the tongue as much as the teeth. The tongue is a spot where bacteria grow very easily, and in most cases, bad breath is caused by out-of-control bacterial growth. Food debris, which tends to accumulate in the back of the mouth and top of the throat, is food for bacteria, as well, but bacteria also feed on nasal drip. Either a sinus infection or a foreign object in the child’s nose can cause drip, which gets stuck in the top of the throat.

Since saliva is one of the body’s checks on bacterial growth, dry mouth is another environment which fosters bad breath. Children who breathe through their mouths or experience dry mouth as a medication side-effect will likely benefit from saliva stimulation, such as comes from chewing sugar-free gum.

Periodontitis

Gingivitis is a minor form of gum disease and is usually reversible in its earliest stage. If gingivitis is not treated promptly, it can advance to the second stage of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gums that destroys the structures of the teeth and can lead to even more serious problems, including higher blood sugar levels and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry can treat periodontitis if it arises, but he would much rather you practice preventive oral hygiene.

Healthy gums are firm and a pale pink. If you spit pink in the sink while brushing your teeth, this is a symptom of gingivitis. Periodontitis, as well as gingivitis, begins with plaque. If plaque isn’t brushed away after eating and drinking, it will fester and lead to tartar which only a dental hygienist is able to remove. There are a number of factors that can aggravate this condition, such as smoking and chewing tobacco, but it’s important to know that it can be prevented by simply brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. In addition, you should be visiting us for professional cleanings at least twice a year.

Nausea after Dental Treatment

You’re sitting in the dental chair getting a routine cleaning. Everything is going fine, but once the procedure is over, you’re feeling a bit nauseous. Visiting the dentist on an empty stomach or too full of a stomach may lead to queasiness or indigestion simply from the positioning of the chair and the smells in the office. Fortunately, Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry can make adjustments to keep you calm and comfortable.

If you’re feeling a bit queasy before your dental appointment, be sure to let the doctor or one of our hygienists know that you’re feeling this way. Allergies and pre-existing conditions such as infections can upset the stomach during a dental cleaning. If the sick feeling doesn’t disappear, take a look at what might be causing nausea. Perhaps you didn’t eat before your appointment or maybe you’ve taken a medication that has some side effects. Regardless of what’s causing your nausea, Dr. Christopher Emuedue will manage your pain the best he can.

If you have questions or concerns about your next dental appointment, please give us a call. Consequences of Root Tip Infections

Root tip infections, scientifically known as periapical abscesses, have long been associated with a number of serious health problems. New studies are also linking them with coronary disease, which is why at Greenville Family Dental, we want our patients to understand them and see us for regular screenings.

When the outer layers of a tooth are cracked or severely decayed, bacteria are able to enter the pulp on the inside and cause an infection at the tip of the tooth’s root. The body’s immune system isolates bacteria by creating an abscess: a pocket filled with pus made up of the bacteria and dead tissue. The abscess often causes extreme pain to the patient’s face and neck, as well as fevers and a persistent terrible taste. If the infection spreads despite the immune system’s efforts, the patient’s life could be in danger.

The type of root tip infection which correlates with coronary disease does not present any symptoms. Therefore, patients need to regularly visit the dentist’s office to get x-rays. They also must not hesitate to have toothaches examined. Cracked teeth can’t heal on their own and the health effects of an infection will only get more severe.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. To schedule an appointment, call 903-455-6701 or visit GreenvilleFamilyDentistryTX.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Acid Reflux and Dental Health

Acid reflux is more than just uncomfortable: it’s a menace to your health. At Greenville Family Dental, we strive to ensure our patients understand how to maintain their oral hygiene. Therefore, they need to know how to stop acid reflux from damaging their teeth.

Hydrochloric acid is a component of stomach acid and is incredibly strong. The stomach has a layer of mucus to protect it, but the rest of the body depends on sphincters to keep hydrochloric acid out. When acid escapes into the esophagus, it causes painful burns all the way into the mouth. There, it erodes enamel, leaving teeth sensitive and discolored. It also causes gum bleeding and inflammation.

Enamel can be protected with fluoride treatments and replaced with white fillings and partial crowns. Bonding can strengthen teeth whose surrounding gum tissue was corroded. But to reduce acid reflux, patients will need to reduce their intake of caffeine, alcohol, foods that are high in fat, and foods and drink that are highly acidic. They may also need to talk to their doctor about changing medications which cause acid reflux as a side effect.

Sealants

Dental sealants are a preventative measure used to preserve the teeth and tooth enamel. Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth, and at Greenville Family Dentistry we regularly apply sealants for young patients to start protecting teeth early!  Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.

Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars, where the pits and grooves tend to trap food and bacteria.  Dental sealants are applied to surfaces of these back teeth much like paint. The plastic resin fills any pits and grooves on the surface and hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay.  Sealants also protect tooth enamel from plaque and acids, and can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years.

If you think anyone in your family would benefit from a dental sealant, please contact us.  Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402.  To schedule an appointment, call 903-455-6701, or visit GreenvilleFamilyDentistryTX.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Scaling and Root Planing

In its most advanced stages, gum disease can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss.  At Greenville Family Dentistry, we want to help you make sure it never gets to that stage.  When sticky bacteria called plaque builds up on a tooth, the gum starts to pull away from the tooth and form a pocket around the buildup.  When left untreated, this only leads to more gum recession.  Scaling and root planing are used to treat this buildup and prevent the later stages of gum disease.

Scaling and root planing are two parts of a deep cleaning procedure we can perform to repair gums. The procedure begins with scaling, the process of removing plaque from the surface of your teeth all the way down to your gums. This is followed by root planing, which involves minor contouring to smooth the surface of a tooth near the root.  Once the plaque has been removed and the tooth root has been smoothed, the gums that have pulled away from the tooth now have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to.

Losing a Permanent Tooth

Our implants at Greenville Family Dental are the best ways patients can replace lost teeth. However, it is sometimes possible to save a tooth that has been knocked out. The tooth must be intact and it has the best chances if the patient sees a dentist within an hour, but if patients know to follow this guide, the odds may be in their favor.

If the accident happened in a place with first aid kits, we hope the kits will be stocked with tooth cleaning solutions and containers approved by the American Dental Association. But if this is not the case, pick up the tooth by its crown, rinse it off with saltwater or milk, and then put it back in its socket. Make sure it is facing the right way and bite down on gauze to keep it in place. If the injury makes placing the tooth impossible, hold it in the cheek or in a container filled with milk or saltwater. However, saving a tooth should not take precedence over a potentially life-threatening injury, such as a massive gash.

It is important to note that only permanent teeth can be saved. Implants must be replaced, while reinserting baby teeth is not recommended because it can disrupt the growth of permanent teeth. If a baby tooth is lost prematurely, the child may be given an orthodontic spacer to preserve the rest of the teeth’s alignment until the permanent one comes in.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Families who visit Greenville Family Dental know how much dentists emphasize to children the importance of preventing cavities. But children are at risk of tooth decay long before they are old enough to clean their own teeth, and we want families to know how they can protect their youngest children from Baby Bottle Tooth Decay.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay is a pattern of tooth decay which affects the front side of toddlers’ incisors (the front teeth). It is believed to be caused by prolonged exposure to sugar in the form of milk or formula from a baby bottle. While dental information commonly and rightly discourages parents from giving children drinks with high sugar content, it is actually the amount of time for which teeth are exposed to sugar which is the biggest risk factor.

Unfortunately, people have a tendency to give toddlers baby bottles filled with milk or formula and let them suck from them for hours. This ensures the child’s teeth will be covered in sugary residue and that they won’t be thirsty enough to ask for water, which could help clean some of the sugar away. Parents can avoid this by limiting children’s time with the bottle, giving them water, and teaching them to drink from cups around the time of their first birthday. Of course, parents should also still avoid giving children drinks with high sugar content, such as juice.

What Is Bone Grafting?

A bone graft might sound like a more intense procedure than a typical dental appointment, but bone grafting has become a routine procedure to help bodies heal.  The bone graft dentists perform is to the jaw bone in order to strengthen the future site of an implant. Dr. Christopher Emuedue can advise when this procedure is necessary. Bone grafting consists of harvesting bone material from a healthy part of a patient’s body, and transferring it to a site that needs reinforcement. This gives the injured or deficient bone a replacement and encourages growth of new material around the site. There are synthetic options for bone grafts, but a dental graft is usually obtained from a different spot in the patient’s own mouth.

When a patient needs a dental implant to replace a lost or damaged tooth, their jaw bone needs to be strong enough to receive the implant. A jaw bone can weaken over time if tooth loss or gum disease has left a certain portion of the jaw vulnerable, and this is when a dentist would perform a bone graft.  The healing process can often take several months, and your jaw is monitored by your dentist until it heals enough to handle the placement of an implant.

Mouth Guards

At Greenville Family Dentistry we want adults and children who are active in sports to know they may be overlooking an important safety precaution.  Athletes participating in any contact sport are advised to wear some kind of mouth protection, and as you and your family sign up for sports this season we are here to give you that protection. A mouth guard helps prevent damage to the teeth and jaw, and injuries to the cheeks, tongue, and lips.

You can find generic mouth guards in most sporting goods stores, but not in many sizes. These mouth guards often end up feeling uncomfortable, which leads to child and teenage athletes in particular not wearing the protection at all.  An ill-fitting or bulky mouth guard can even interrupt breathing and speaking. Have your dentist perform a custom mouth guard fitting and get a mouth guard made of thin, hard plastic that protects your teeth and still fits comfortably.  Mouth guards can also be fit over braces, preventing brackets from rubbing the inside of the mouth. This is an easy precaution to take for athletes, and you can go right back to playing your best!

Periodontal Splinting

Greenville Family Dentistry’s Dr. Christopher Emuedue is experienced in many kinds of restorations for his patients’ damaged teeth and gums. But what happens when teeth are loose enough to cause problems, but the doctor or patient doesn’t want to extract them? One solution is a periodontal splint, which distributes bite force across multiple teeth, sparing the loose one.

Usually, when we speak of weak teeth, we are actually talking about weak gum tissue. The splint is a permanent fixture in the mouth which provides an alternative anchor, stretching across the backs of the incisors. It is made out of a porous fiber which is dipped in resin. While older splints required lots of resin, the modern ones only create a small ridge, minimizing the unusual feeling of something being permanently stuck to the teeth.

During the application process, the gums are shielded with a gel inserted between each tooth. The teeth are etched with a mild acid to provide them with more surface area for the resin to grip to. This is the same type of acid used when orthodontists attach brackets to the front of the teeth, and shouldn’t result in prolonged sensitivity. Though a splint can’t reverse periodontal disease, it can mitigate a patient’s fears of tooth loss.

Effects of Thumb Sucking

While running the Greenville Family Dentistry office, Dr. Christopher Emuedue is happy to advise new parents on how to care for their baby’s oral health. Thumb sucking is a common behavior in toddlers, and parents often worry about whether it’s a problem.

Usually, children’s skull bones are flexible enough for changes in shape resulting from thumb sucking during their early years to resolve themselves. However, if thumb sucking (or pacifier sucking) persists after the age of five, when children start losing their baby teeth, it can endanger their oral health. Misaligned jaws, misshapen mouth cavities, and misaligned teeth are all known to be caused by thumb sucking at a late age.

Sometimes when they are discouraged from thumb sucking, children will develop a habit of thrusting their tongues against their front teeth, instead. This is equally problematic. While there are orthodontic devices which can discourage these behaviors, because they may result from anxiety, it is best to try to get the child to understand the reason for the dentist’s concern and to participate in breaking their bad habits.

Panorex Imaging

Dr. Christopher Emuedue maintains a high-tech office at Greenville Family Dentistry. Among his most important diagnostic tools, and the one likely to make the biggest impression on patients, is the Panorex imaging machine. This instrument is used to take digital x-rays what show a 360⁰ view of a patient’s jaws.

As with traditional photo x-rays, patients are advised to wear leather aprons and remove metal objects. However, the imaging process only takes about twenty seconds and the patients don’t need to hold photographic film in their mouths. The will still have to bite on a bite blocker to keep their jaws aligned and place their chins on a ledge, but the process is far more comfortable than the old-fashioned way.

The resulting digital image can be used with dental software for purposes such as predicting tooth migration. But it is also advantageous for providing much more detail about the current state of a patient’s mouth. Besides monitoring the eruption of canines and wisdom teeth, x-ray images can be used to detect infected tooth roots, supervise the integration of implants into bone, and generally ensure that the bone tissue in a patient’s mouth and jaw is in working order.

How to Care for Dentures

At Greenville Family Dentistry, we work hard to maintain our relationships with patients who wear dentures. Getting an artificial set of teeth does not end a person’s need for dental care, but it does change their oral hygiene routine.

Teeth naturally produce their own protective film that allows them to withstand the minerals in toothpaste which scrub away tartar. But dentures are much more delicate. They should only be brushed with specially-designed toothpaste and must be brushed all over, not just on the prosthetic teeth. While their dentures are out for the night, patients should continue brushing their gums and tongues using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

There are cleaning solutions available for dentures to soak in overnight, although room-temperature water will do. The important thing is that dentures be kept moist. Patients must be cautious, however, not to use hot water. The soft material of the prosthetic soft palette and gums can easily warp when overheated and will require professional attention to repair. It is likely that patients will need to have their dentures refitted over time, but they should not attempt to reshape them on their own.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue operates Greenville Family Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402. To schedule an appointment, call 903-455-6701 or visit GreenvilleFamilyDentistryTX.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Gingivitis Risk Factors

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease that causes inflammation of your gums. Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware that you have the condition. However, it’s important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. If you are not maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine, Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry is here to help by providing you with routine dental cleanings.

Gingivitis commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth (plaque). Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease, which means that it can be prevented. Generally, gingivitis resolves with good oral hygiene – longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing. If the condition is left untreated, gum disease can spread and affect tissue, teeth, and bones, leading to periodontitis which can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Dental Procedures for Saving Rotten Teeth

Saving your smile is our top priority here at Greenville Family Dentistry, which is why we offer a variety of restorative services to protect what is left of teeth that have become decayed or rotten. Tooth decay is damage that occurs when germs (bacteria) in your mouth make acids that eat away at a tooth. If not treated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection, and tooth loss. Here at the office, a number of procedures for rotten teeth are used depending on the extent of the decay.

  • Root Canal – A root canal treats rotting teeth with extensive decay. If a dental cavity progresses through the dentin and into the pulp – the center of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels – the nerves in the teeth become infected and a root canal is needed to remove the affected tissue.

  • Tooth Extractions – If tooth decay or damage extends to the pulp, bacteria in the mouth can enter the pulp, leading to infection. If the infection is so severe that antibiotics or a root canal cannot cure it, extraction may be needed to prevent the spread of infection.

These are just a couple of restorative dental procedures, if you would like to explore other restorative dental options, please give us a call. Inlays and Onlays

We provide a number of cosmetic and functional tooth restorations at Greenville Family Dentistry. Among the most important of these are inlays and onlays. While artificial crows can be used to save a tooth, using one also requires the underlying tooth to be significantly reshaped. If only the grinding surface of a molar or premolar is damaged, it may be possible to use an even less invasive restoration in the form of a partial crown.

Partial crowns are classified as inlays or onlays depending on how much of the tooth they are meant to replace. An inlay only replaces the indentations of a chewing tooth in between its raised, pointy cusps. It is similar to the sealants used on children, but a permanent piece of porcelain. An onlay also replaces at least one of the cusps. Before either can be placed, Dr. Emuedue will have to determine the reason for the tooth’s condition, and remove the decayed material, if any. He will then make an impression of the patient’s mouth and send it to a laboratory where the restoration will be manufactured. Once it is complete, it can be cemented in during a return visit, and the patient will once again chew without agitation.

Signs of Implant Failure

Dental implants are highly useful both for restoring teeth and stabilizing a jaw, but they need to be cared for just like normal teeth. Sometimes, if they are compromised by periodontal disease, or if there was a problem with their installation, they may fail. Considering how much trouble a patient went through to get an implant, this is always extremely unfortunate. That is why patients should be aware if something is going wrong with their implant as soon as possible.

Sometimes a problem will immediately be evident if the surgical wound fails to heal for several days after an implant is placed, or if the patient is in severe pain which does not dissipate over time. There are a few people who are allergic to the metal most implants are made of. An inexperienced dentist might also place an implant too close to a nerve, which would be the cause of severe pain. Patients can self-monitor for signs of infection, while doctors are responsible for monitoring changes in jaw bone size. If a patient loses too much jaw bone material, it is a sign that the implant is failing to integrate and stabilize the surrounding structure, and further investigation is necessary.

Pediatric Tooth Extraction

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from the bone socket and is a scary procedure for adults, let alone children. For a child, this procedure can be terrifying since he or she does not know what to expect and will often worry that the procedure will hurt. At Greenville Family Dentistry, Dr. Christopher Emuedue offers a variety of ways to soothe your child’s fear before a tooth extraction.

Dr. Christopher Emuedue will extract your child’s tooth if it has become decayed to the point where a root canal is not an option. A child’s tooth may also be extracted if the tooth is fractured beyond repair, or if the mouth is overcrowded with teeth. If your child is getting braces, Dr. Christopher Emuedue may also decide to extract one or more teeth to make room for shifting teeth. Nitrous Oxide is also available for children who find this procedure frightening; however, they will need a preliminary visit with Dr. Christopher Emuedue to make sure they are an eligible candidate for nitrous sedation.

If you have questions or concerns about pediatric tooth extraction, please give us a call. Denture Pain Causes and Treatment

Denture pain typically stems from poor fitting or poorly adjusted dentures. It may also be a result of new dentures, worn over soft tissues that have not developed thick, toughened layers of protective keratin. If you are experiencing gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, mouth infections and/or dentures that move around in your mouth, give Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry a call to discuss your treatment options.

If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. In addition, you should never experience pain when wearing your dentures. If you do experience pain from your dentures and this discomfort is not treated by speaking slowly, eating soft foods or using an adhesive, your dentures may need to be replaced. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we have plenty of tooth-replacement options for you to choose from if dentures aren’t working out.

If you have dentures that are causing you pain, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. Wisdom Tooth Decay

As we age, we acquire wisdom, and the same goes for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17-21 and are known as the third set of molars. When they erupt correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chomp your food a little faster.  However, if they start to cause you pain and discomfort, you may need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Christopher Emuedue of Greenville Family Dentistry to discuss extraction.

If you bite on a piece of food that is too hard or you experience a mouth injury, wisdom teeth may become troublesome. They can also become cracked, broken, and decayed. Decay can form on any tooth surface, but when the decay begins to attack the wisdom teeth, depending on the position of the tooth it becomes difficult to clean. Depending on the individual case, Dr. Emuedue may be able to fill the tooth, but even in cases where a filling could be successfully placed, if the wisdom tooth cannot be adequately maintained, recurrent decay can occur. Though many patients tend to procrastinate through the process, extraction is always best to avoid infection.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you have questions about removal, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

Toothbrush Care

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush; however appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for oral hygiene. At Greenville Family Dentistry, we want you to know how and when to replace, clean, and store your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

If you have further questions regarding toothbrush care, give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.greenvillefamilydentistrytx.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Christopher Emuedue at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX, call 903-455-6701.

HPV Fuels Oral Cancers

At Greenville Family Dentistry, we provide a full array of services to improve and maintain our clients’ oral health. Among the most important of those are oral cancer screenings. Therefore, it is of great concern to us that oral cancer diagnoses have remained steady in the United States in recent years. This is in large part due to the human papilloma virus (HPV) having superseded smoking as the main causative factor.

Tobacco, alcohol, genetics, and HPV are the most common reasons for the developments of cancers in the mouth and throat. All are more likely to occur in men, but HPV cancers are more likely to occur in young men. Anti-cancer educational efforts aimed at this generation mostly focused on tobacco and were successful in lowering the rate of smoking and chewing tobacco among young people, which will have great benefits for their long-term health. However, they may have also given them the impression that they are not in a high-risk group. In fact, while HPV-related oral cancers are more responsive to treatment than smoking-related ones, they also tend to be farther back in the throat, and more commonly go undetected until they have progressed to the point of constituting an emergency. Therefore, it is of great importance that young people make use of oral cancer screenings, so cancers containing HPV DNA can be caught before they cause severe damage.

Intraoral Cameras

Greenville Family Dentistry is a technologically advanced clinic which hosts the most up-to-date tools for patient diagnosis. These not only are designed to catch pathologies, but also reflect the philosophy that patients should be kept comfortable and provided with a full understanding of their own health. The intraoral camera is an example of screening in a way which provides feedback to patients and doctors alike.

Intraoral cameras create high-resolution digital images on screens in Dr. Emuedue’s office. They have their own LED, and can be moved by a hygienist to monitor any part of a patient’s mouth. The images they provide are extremely useful for surface-level observations of the patient’s tongue, gum, and tooth health. When combined with digital x-rays, they provide dentists with the best possible tools for predicting changes in the patients’ mouth, as well as assessing its current state. But unlike x-rays and the images from oral cancer screenings, the true-color intraoral camera images are easy for patients to interpret, which allows them to verify what the dentist is telling them and provide evidence of the necessity for treatment to their insurance companies and families. Besides increasing the trust between patient and doctor, intraoral cameras also allow caregivers to feel more confident in their decisions for their dependents.
