Tips for a Healthy Mouth

Keeping your mouth clean is vital to the health of your oral cavity as well as the health of many of the body’s systems. Here at Greenville Family Dentistry in Greenville, TX we want to give our patients some tips for a healthy mouth.


Brushing and flossing are the first and foremost important parts of an oral hygiene routine. When plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar and cause decay. Plaque starts to form hours after brushing and flossing. This is why it is important to brush two to three times per day. This is also why it is important to floss every single day. Remember to brush your cheeks, the roof of your mouth, and your tongue as bacteria can build up in all of these places, as well.


Brushing and flossing should be done once in the morning, once before bed, and once during the day, if possible. However, brushing should be done a half an hour after eating. The acids in our food can cause enamel to wear down when our teeth are brushed immediately after eating them.


Along with a daily oral care routine, regular visits to your dentist are also part of having a healthy mouth. Make sure to schedule your exam and cleaning! If you have been experiencing redness of the gums, tooth sensitivity, or pain when chewing, these are definite signs that an examination by your dentist is needed.
